Getting Permission: Houka Monks Reply

New Band

After playing The Cutaway to our teacher in class, she didn't think the lead vocalist's voice was strong enough, so myself and Mandy went back to researching into another unsigned band. After a long search we came across the Houka Monks, who were put forward for E4's unsigned act. 


We came across their song, Strange Things, and liked it straight away for it's unusual funk sound, which isn't very common in the mainstream music scene at the moment. Myself and Mandy then contacted them asking if we could use them, which they replied yes too!

Myself and Mandy are looking forward to working with one of their songs for our music video, we now need to decide on a song and see what others think as well.

Unsigned bands

When we were given this project, I immediately thought that it was going to be hard to narrow a choice of bands down and find a genre suitable to reflect contemporary Britain. My first thoughts for an artist was a hip-hop artist in Norwich named, Charlie Snacks,

However, after some thought and consideration I thought that the genre wouldn't appeal to everyone because hip-hop originated from the USA which was performed by black artists. So, I started to search again for an unsigned artist. After browsing my iTunes to see if I had any unsigned artists on my libary I remembered a band that I used to listen to a lot back in 2009, but I thought they were signed. I emailed them via FaceBook after finding out beforehand that they weren't signed via there myspace- http://www.myspace.com/thecutawayuk

They later replied, saying:

After receiving the reply, I was obviously very happy that the band would let me use one of their songs to make my music video. The hard part now will be finding the song that will work well.

3 of my favourite music videos

1. Vogue- Madonna

This song alone is a classic, but the video in general looks artistically appealing with it being in Black and White. The low lighting and panning shots accompany the song hand in hand, as well as the choreographed dance routine.

2. Praise You- Fatboy Slim

The music video is directed by Spike Jonze, a well known director in the film industry, who also stars in the video. The video was filmed 'guerilla' style, meaning that you film on  location without permission from the owner. The cheap appearance/reality of the music video makes it very unique and is not like other music videos, although it has a choreographed dance routine, it does not look like the average music video. The ambient lighting coming from within the location (the cinema) gives it an edgy feel with it being filmed by a handheld camera.

3. Animal- Miike Snow

This video is quite recent so uses more modern editing techniques. The stop motion used is an idea that I would like to consider for my music video. I like in this music video how the narrative fits with the music and range of media techniques used in this add a dream-like feel, from slow-motion to strobe lighting they all layer up to accompany a good song.
